Tooth numbering: FDI and Universal
Pakistan uses the FDI system: two digits, the first for the quadrant (1 upper right, 2 upper left, 3 lower left, 4 lower right, and 5 to 8 for milk teeth) and the second for the tooth counted from the midline. The Universal system, used in the US, numbers permanent teeth 1 to 32 starting from the upper right third molar, and milk teeth A to T.
| Tooth | Upper right | Upper left | Lower left | Lower right |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Central incisor | 11 · 8 | 21 · 9 | 31 · 24 | 41 · 25 |
| Lateral incisor | 12 · 7 | 22 · 10 | 32 · 23 | 42 · 26 |
| Canine | 13 · 6 | 23 · 11 | 33 · 22 | 43 · 27 |
| First premolar | 14 · 5 | 24 · 12 | 34 · 21 | 44 · 28 |
| Second premolar | 15 · 4 | 25 · 13 | 35 · 20 | 45 · 29 |
| First molar | 16 · 3 | 26 · 14 | 36 · 19 | 46 · 30 |
| Second molar | 17 · 2 | 27 · 15 | 37 · 18 | 47 · 31 |
| Third molar | 18 · 1 | 28 · 16 | 38 · 17 | 48 · 32 |
Permanent teeth: FDI · Universal. The patient's right is on the left of the chart.
Palmer notation, still taught in some places, writes the tooth number 1 to 8 inside a corner bracket that shows the quadrant. In FindClinica the same teeth also show as short codes such as RU6, LU6, LL6 and RL6 (right upper 6 and so on), next to the FDI number.
Milk teeth
Primary teeth in FDI use quadrants 5 to 8; in the Universal system they are letters.

| Lateral incisor | 52 · D | 62 · G | 72 · N | 82 · Q |

Charting by tooth in FindClinica
In the app, every treatment is tied to a tooth. Tap the tooth on the chart, which shows the FDI number and has a child mode for milk teeth, and the record fills in for you. Later you can filter a patient's whole history by tooth; teeth with records carry a dot. More about dental charting in FindClinica.

Common questions
Which numbering system do dentists in Pakistan use?
FDI (two-digit) numbering is the standard in Pakistan and most of the world. The Universal system is mainly used in the United States.
What are the five surfaces on each box?
The middle square is the biting surface (occlusal, or incisal for front teeth). The four sides are the cheek or lip side, the tongue or palate side, and the two sides facing the neighbouring teeth (mesial and distal).
Can I use different marks for caries and fillings?
Yes. The marks printed on the chart are only a suggestion; use whatever your clinic already uses.
